Bank Negara’s Museum and Art Gallery

Bank Negara’s museum and art gallery, also known as Sasana Kijang, currently hosts Puan Sri Norma Abbas’ exhibit, which runs till April 2017.It features 70 artworks, divided to two sections.

She is apparently a follower of Picasso and  her work is (according to write ups I came across) influenced by Cubism. I obviously don’t know my art styles and won’t be able to tell Impressionism from Cubism so it took some research to find out what Cubism is. Reading an art review does feel like reading a new language.

So in Cubist artwork, objects are analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form—instead of depicting objects from a single viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Much like the deconstructed sushi or salad I guess (although they’re not reassembled in an abstract form heheh).

Art style not withstanding, I really like the vibrant pieces which are supposed to depict her relationships with her family and friends. The cat that features in some of the pieces is her cat, Angel Pooditat.

My favourite piece from the exhibition is this untitled piece on the left, similar to another one titled Monalisa that she painted 10 years ago. I would love these in my living room.

The museum is located at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery, Sasana Kijang building, Jalan Dato’ Onn, Kuala Lumpur. Admission is free.
